Bharti Airtel, frustrated with the Government of India’s lethargic attitude towards wireless-spectrum (used for cellphones), promised to pay Rs. 2650 Crores for 4.4 MHz. You know what the funny thing is? The Government only wanted Rs. 1650 Crores.

The Government is also planning to release 25 MHz of spectrum in the next few weeks. That means an income of about Rs. 20,000 crores that the cell phones companies are welling to just give to the government. And this spectrum is not an “thing” that has to be manufactured. It’s just a license to use that radio frequency.

To put that number in perspective. The government spent Rs. 24,115 Crores last year on Education (University grants + primary schools in rural areas + teacher’s salaries + whatnot).

It strikes me as very stupid that the Government is dilly-dallying this spectrum action especially when so much money is at stake.
