I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently: Why do cellphone operators charge as much as Re. 1 for sending a simple SMS? It just doesn’t make any sense.
Consider this: A SMS is basically 160 chars + some headers = about 200 bytes of data transfered over the network. Cost = 100p/200 bytes = 0.05 paise per byte. For a much higher-speed GPRS/EDGE connection, operators charge 10p per 10kb. Cost = 10p/10000 bytes = 0.001 paise per byte. That means, operators are overcharging for SMS by 500% !!!
It just doesn’t make any sense. It costs Airtel and Idea and all these operators less that 0.2 paise to send an SMS across the network, but they charge Re. 1, because they CAN. It’s ridiculous. I’d much rather log into my gmail account and send an e-mail instead of SMS!
